Tips on Travel in Ko Samui
1. Food & Drink :
Food prices were reasonable. We couldn’t get enough of the salty, sourish not so spicy Tom Yum Goong. We could drink them for lunch, dinner everyday.
2. Weather:
The weather is extremely hot in June. Please do sun protection using sunscreen or wear a hat to protect the scalp.
Mosquitoes are common in tropical places. We applied mosquito repellent lotion all over our exposed areas and attached mosquito patches to our tops before we stepped out of the resort room. It worked well. We had no swollen insect bites when we came back.
3. Walking About in the Streets:
It felt safe to walk by ourselves in the streets of Ko Samui, buying things or drive around. There were many tourists around too.
Pavements at the side of the road are narrow and uneven with some steps in between cross lanes. It’s difficult to maneuver with a stroller. Hence, we had to make our 3 year-old walk most of the time.
4. Language & Things To Buy:
Locals were helpful, friendly and knew a bit of English so we had no problem buying stuff.
The prices for clothing and shoes were very cheap. We were also fond of their handmade things. I love their beautiful hand carved soap flower and elephant figurines.
5. Self-Driving / Car Rental:
The car rides were always smooth with only occasional stops at traffic lights. The roads are one-lane traffic, with cars all going in a single direction so it’s easy to drive. Occasionally, some may do an illegal turn and travel in the opposite direction on a narrow road so one still have to be careful and look out for those cars.
