We visited the largest market in Seogwipo to eat some street snacks and buy some local goodies. It is located at the South of Jeju Island and quite near to our accommodation in Jungmum-dong. However, we came from our coastal walk in Mt. Songaksan (at southwest), hence it took quite a while to reach and find a place to park. By the time we reached the entrance here, it was around 8 plus and I discovered to our dismay that many shops were closed or closing.

Street Food Available
I began to worry whether we would have enough food to fill our hungry tummies. The rest of the stalls in Seogwipo Market had long queues in front. I wanted to get an interesting looking “octopus” snack but the long queue made us searched for an alternative, lest no more food is left.

Finally, we saw a stall selling steaming Bao with chicken and bought a few. A cute snack with orange fillings also caught our attention and they were quite delicious. In fact, anything that is made from orange in Jeju Island (snacks or juice), was delicious because the oranges are locally grown.

We came to an interesting stall selling fried crab snacks. Vin joined the long queue and snatched up the last six for all of us! The person behind was so upset. By the way, they were quite delicious too.

Unfortunately, many shops were really closing or sold out so I didn’t really eat much and just concentrating on shopping for local goodies. Later on, we bought some food at a CU (convenience store) on our way back and we cooked some instant beehoon that my mum brought from home.
My suggestion is that, If you are looking for street food, do come early before 8pm. However, they are not filling as dinner and quite expensive. The other half of the market (majority) sells local produce such as fish, meat, fruits and vegetables. The food stalls are mainly near the entrance and there were not many of them.
Benches
There were benches in the middle of the road for us to sit and eat our food after buying them. I thought this was quite thoughtful of them.

Shopping for Jeju Island Local Snacks

We bought a few boxes of this chocolate snack that was shaped like the Jeju Totem (Dol hareubangs). They were sold like 5 boxes in a pack or 10 boxes. I did not know what they taste like so we bought 5 of them. The chocolate was not too sweet and there were a number of flavours, like orange, cactus and green tea. I do not see them sold anywhere else when I try to search online. Thus, they are really precious and great as a gift to friends. Ling loves it so much too. We bought a few more chocolate snacks from Seongsan Ilchubong’s gift shop and they were delicious too.
