From strolling the Shanghai Bund, we walked to Nanjing Road East to do some sight-seeing and look for dinner.

Being in China, you would have to get used to the crowd. We were walking with lots of people and flanked by people at the sides, front and back. The sidewalk wasn’t enough for us all to walk and some people spilled onto the road. We still played safe by walking on the pathway as much as possible and kept inside.
Since we had the intention to get some souvenirs, we looked out for street shops as we walked. Soon, a shop selling many China snacks came into view. We quickly side-stepped into the shop and took sometime to browse through.

However, there were just too many varieties of snacks which we had not seen before. If we are buying for relatives back home, we need to know whether they were tasty. There was only one friendly staff handing out a peanut snack for free-tasting. Thus, we ended up buying only that.

Shops Along Nanjing Road East
Continuing our walk, we reached the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Walkway. This was a blocked area with shops on both sides. Finally, we felt more comfortable to walk here as the crowd dispersed to various shops and there was no risk of traffic.
I wanted to visit this shop for children but we really wanted to find our dinner place before it closed. Thus, we gave it a miss and did not check out the store.

We were quite amused at the various slogans around Shanghai, “educating” the citizens. This was one of them which said that “Innovation is the soul which helps a culture of people to move forward”

I felt a little disappointed that the shops along the way were mostly departmental stores or restaurants. I had thought they were more like small street shops. We did not feel like venturing into any of the buildings, since we weren’t familiar. I think we should have done some research beforehand on what kind of shops are there and find them specifically.
Dinner – Shun Feng Restaurant
After a long walk which I was almost about to give up (abt 25 mins from the snack shop), we finally reached Shun Feng Restaurant at 8.12pm. We had to take the elevator to the 7th Floor. From leaving the Bund until reaching here, it had been around 50 minutes, so we were all dead tired and just want to settle with a quick meal.

The ambience of the restaurant was nice and lots of diners were leaving since it was quite late. We browsed through the menu and was recommended this dish – Crab and Fish Meat with Starch. It looked interesting and something we had never ate before. Their dishes are of the 本帮菜 /上海菜 (Shanghai Cuisine). We also ordered our favourite Crispy Chicken dish.
Taste Review:
We loved the food we ordered! They were delicious and reasonable priced. The Crab and Fish Meat with Starch dish was a little salty but we ate it with rice so it was alright. I was satisfied that we had chose this based on good reviews and not just finding any on the street.

This was our orders:
- 蟹粉鱼米 (crab and fish meat with starch)- 88 RMB
- 脆皮鸡 (半)(crispy chicken) - 58 RMB
- 米饭 (rice x 3)- ?
- 酸梅汁 (plum juice- my favourite)- 12 RMB
- 啤酒 (beer) -12 RMB
I was surprised they served fruits – watermelon for free too.
This was the first Chinese Restaurant meal we had in China and the bill was so cheap (compared to what we are used to, locally in Singapore) that we started having meals like this in various other locations! (eat like a royalty ^^)

Going Back To Hotel
After eating, we spent a long time trying to get a taxi via the DiDi App, but none was available. That was when we realised that taxis after 9pm was scarce. The night was cold and windy at around 8 degrees Celsius. We hid in the lobby while Vin went out to the street, hopeful for a taxi to pass by. However, it was futile.
Thus, we decided to just walk to the Subway station to take the subway back to our hotel – SSAW Boutique Hotel Shanghai Bund. It is near on (2-minute walk away).
This was one of those times I was glad for us choosing a hotel near the metro/subway. If car transport failed, at least we had an alternative.
First Time on the MRT
It was our first time on the China Shanghai Subway and Dar was really excited (he loves trains). Everybody seemed to be heading home around that time (10pm) and taking the metro. Thus, walking with the crowd was a little scary but manageable. It was quite easy to find the station we need to go to and purchase the tickets too.

Back at the hotel, we were tired but satisfied with our Day 1 exploration of Shanghai. Everything worked out as planned and we would be visiting museums tomorrow.
